| Shasta Pools & Spas to provide the City of Chandler with Healthier Pools by Whitney | |
Shasta Industries is currently under contract with the City of Chandler contracted with Shasta Industries to install ultraviolet (UV) disinfection systems on the City Pools. The contract value is approximately $700,000 and includes installations at all seven of the City’s facilities. The seven facilities, Mesquite Groves, Hamilton, West Chandler, Arrowhead, Folley and Desert Oasis each received a UV system for each body of water, totaling eleven systems.
The visible light spectrum has wavelengths between 400-760 nm. UV light has wavelengths of 200-400 nm and carrying substantial energy. The UV wavelengths used in pool water sanitization is 200-300 nm. Pool water passes through the UV chamber and is exposed to the UV light. The UV light neutralizes bacteria, viruses, protozoa and spores. It also stops them from reproducing by breaking down the molecular structure of the DNA. It is extremely effective against two common organisms found in pools, Cryptosporidium and Giardia. Traditional chlorine sanitization has a difficult time inactivating these pathogens whereas UV has a 99.9% instant inactivation rate. This state of the art technology will provide the public with additional protection against these pathogens.
The system selected by the City and Shasta is the Siemns Barrier M. The UV lamps are housed in a stainless steel chamber and controlled by a NEMA 4 panel with its own air conditioning source to ensure no disruption in service. Installation of the systems consisted of substantial plumbing bypass loops of up to 10” plumbing.
